Should I buy duurtlang’s base model 205, and take it on the Europpomeet instead of my Twingo? It should be more fun, and if I manage to find the double carbs that the engine came with originaly, it should have around 80hp.
Besides that I have about a month of free time after I finish university, and this could be a nice passtime during that period, I think.

Small disclaimer for those not familiar with these: empty weight is 749 kg (1651 lbs).
You can street park it at some random location just fine, just note that if you want to take advantage of the oldtimer tax benefit (1/4 the price) you have to park it somewhere out of sight for December-February. Full price is €176 yearly for N-Brabant, so not too bad.

I’ll take my one year newer but still pre-facelift 1987 205 CTi. You can take it for a spin. They’re both very fun to drive imho, but the difference in how they drive is huge. The CTi feels way more modern, with much stiffer suspension, much wider tires with much bigger wheels and the GTI suspension. And 28% more weight! It is both a good thing and a bad thing. The white one is very charming in how it drives. The cheapest way (including parts/maintenance) to drive a French car that feels like it’s from the 70s.

Yes. This is something you should do. No question about it.
Honestly, I can’t think of a car I’ve bought for £300 or less that hasn’t been a brilliant idea.
First car project? Start with GTi suspension and brakes and whatnot, doing it as a bit of a rolling projects (and actually doing the rolling project thing, rather than falling into the trap of ‘while I’m here I might as well...’). Eventually work your way up to a full GTi for less than €1500!

Honestly? This car is so entertaining with its suspension and wheels, I wouldn’t change it. Just keep it in good/safe condition. I believe post-facelift (late 1987+) base 205s were already much harder sprung and much lower . This one really leans into corners like French cars of yore. It’s hilarious! At legal city speeds!

That sounds like a good idea! Although keeping it semi-stock also appeals to me, just to preserve it for future generations.

I could street park it, but prefer to have it close to home, and my street is filled to the brim with cars as is (having lots of neighbours with kids in their early 20s does that I guess)
Also, I’ll take you up on the spin in the turbo CTi! But yeah, I get what you mean, completely type of driving ‘ experience’.

Perhaps, although the idea of preservation doesn’t tend to last long as far as I’ve found. It’s already modified somewhat, so why not continue to tinker? ;)
If not GTi, then definitely this:
